Executive Team

Andy Choi, MBA
     Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Choi has over 20 years of experience in product development and commercialization with expertise in the medical device industry. He has held executive positions ranging from engineering to marketing and sales within Fortune 500 companies, as well as within start-up companies.

Prior to co-founding Innovasive, Mr. Choi was the Chief Business Development Officer at CTL and the VP of R&D at Ellipse Technologies and VertiFlex. While at VertiFlex, he introduced a pioneering minimally invasive technology, enabling interventional physicians to surgically treat lumbar spinal stenosis. He also led the development and the asset sale of a spinal fusion system to Stryker, achieving a 10x return in less than a year from concept to commercialization.

For almost 10 years, Mr. Choi held leadership positions in both marketing and engineering with Stryker Spine and Orthopedics. As a Business Director and a Chief Engineer, he led the development and commercialization of numerous flagship products ranging from Minimally Invasive Systems to Surgical Navigation. Under his leadership, the MIS business unit achieved 70% growth, earning him the Stryker Field Impact award. In 2007, he was showcased in the Stryker Corporation Annual Report for his contribution in developing and launching the Xia 3 Spinal Fusion System, which achieved $200 million in global sales in the first year. Mr. Choi is an author of multiple US and international patents.

Mr. Choi earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from U.C. Berkeley and received his MBA from Rutgers University. He also completed executive education program from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Jeffrey Roh, MD, MBA
     Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Roh has over fifteen years of experience as an inventor, angel investor, and serial entrepreneur and holds multiple patents through the USPTO. He is a Co-Founder of Intuitive IP, a Seattle-based intellectual property firm.

He currently serves as a consultant on Stryker corporation’s Surgical Design and Innovation team and was instrumental in the development of their most commercially successful minimally invasive spine system of all time, ES2, as well as their marquee lateral access platform, ARIA. His experience as a serial entrepreneur includes the successful launch, scalable growth, and ultimate acquisition of Advanced Biologics to Bioventus in 2014.

Dr. Roh currently serves as the Chair of Swedish Hospital’s Integrated Spine Program, is the Chair of the Seattle Science Foundation’s annual Minimally Invasive Spine Symposium, and serves as a consultant on Providence Venture’s Strategy & Innovation team. He is also an Executive Board Member of ProOrtho, Division of Proliance Surgeons.

He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Case Western Reserve University and his spine surgery fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. He is a graduate of the Michael G. Foster School of Business MBA program at the University of Washington.

Charles Zahl, MBA
     Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Zahl is a serial entrepreneur with broad experience as a founder and executive in several startup companies. He has over 15 years of experience in a range of industries including mobile marketing, diagnostics, and business services. Mr. Zahl’s background includes executive and operational management, fundraising, product development, strategic planning, business development, finance, and market development.

Following the sale of Soapbox Mobile in 2006, Mr. Zahl has consulted with startup and early-stage companies to raise capital, develop business and marketing plans, design market entry and product development strategies, and negotiate technology licensing agreements. He is an active community leader serving on the San Marcos Economic Development Corporation and the San Marcos Budget Review Committee, and previously was a member of the General Plan Advisory Committee.

Mr. Zahl earned his B.A. in Political Science from U.C. San Diego and his MBA from Sant Clara University.

Mark Han, Esq.
     Chief Legal Officer

Mr. Han specializes in intellectual property law with an emphasis on strategic portfolio development, investment due diligence, and commercialization of IP.

Mr. Han previously served as Senior IP Counsel at Intellectual Ventures where his team was responsible for managing all aspects of prosecution and asset maintenance for one of the world’s largest patent portfolios, with more than 30,000 assets and over $6 billion in investor capital.

Before joining Intellectual Ventures, Mr. Han practiced intellectual property law for over 10 years representing clients such as Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, STMicroelectronics, and Seagate.

Mr. Han earned his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School. He is a member of the Washington State Bar and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office

Scientific Advisory Board

Dr. Hyeun-sung Kim, Director of Spine at Suwon Nanoori Hospital

Dr. Kim is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of endoscopic spine surgery in Korea. He is currently the director of spine at Suwon Nanoori Hospital and is a founding member of the Korean Endoscopic Spine Society.

He is an author of over 15 international scientific publications on endoscopic spine and is considered one of the most active academic clinicians in the field. He has performed more than 1500 endoscopic procedures to date.

He is very active in the international academic stages including serving as faculty for the WCMISST and the World Spine. He is frequently invited to countries in Europe, Asia and South America to speak and train on endoscopic spine.

Prof. Jin-sung Kim, Professor at Catholic University of Korea,
     College of Medicine

Prof. Kim is a professor of neurosurgery at the prestigious Catholic University Medical School in Seoul, South Korea. He has over 10 years of experience in performing and teaching endoscopic spine surgery and is currently the director of endoscopic spine surgery at the Seoul St. Mary Hospital.

He completed several international spine fellowships including one at the prestigious Washington University in St. Louis with Dr. Daniel Riew. He has been voted one of the World’s Top 100 Health Professionals and the World Top 100 Educators by the International Biographical Centre in England (IBC 2011). He was also voted by the American Biographical Institute (ABI 2011) as one of the Great Minds of the 21st Century.

Dr. Kim is an author of many noted international publications. Two of his publications were voted top 10 by the National Institute of Health (NIH) BioMedLib search engine. He also won Best Paper at SMISS in 2011, the most well-known and internationally-attended global forum for minimally invasive spine surgery.

He is an active member and faculty at various international spine organizations such as WCMISST, SMISS, NASS, CNS and AOSpine.

Prof. Jeung-yoon Park, Professor at Yonsei University, College of Medicine

Prof. Park is a professor of neurosurgery at the prestigious Yonsei University Medical School in Seoul, South Korea. He is also the director of endoscopic spine surgery at the Gang-Nam Severance Hospital in Seoul.

He is a prolific educator and researcher with international spine training from the prestigious SRH Klinikum Karsbad-Langensteinbach in Germany and also from the Minimal Access Spine Technologies Center in Memphis, TN.

His most notable and unique accomplishment is in authoring a highly recognized paper in Nature while he was at the Institute for Medical Engineering and Science, and Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was the only MD in the history of the institution to lead such a research study and to publish in a world-class journal.

He is an active member and faculty at various international spine organizations such as SMISS, NASS and WCMISST.

Dr. Dong-hwa Heo, Director of Endoscopic Spine Surgery at Leon Wiltze
     Memorial Hospital

Dr. Heo is the director of Endoscopic Spine Surgery at the historical Leon Wiltze Hospital in South Korea. He is an active academic surgeon and author of many publications and medical text books. He recently authored a chapter in the Surgical Atlas of Spine titled, “Fixation of the Thoracic Thoracolumbar Junction – Anterior Fixation”. He is also the editor-at-large for the Journal of the Neurosurgical Sciences.

He is most recently recognized as a pioneer in the newest and widely accepted, Unilateral Bi-portal Endoscopic (UBE) technique that is being recognized as a revolutionary way to approach spine surgery. A first publication of this technique is now available in the Journal of the Neuro-surgical Sciences.

He is actively involved in the major spine societies such as Eurospine, SMISS, and NASS.
